When Your Adult Child Moves Back Home and You See Politics Differently
Living together again means the TV, the dinner table, and the kitchen are shared ground. You're both adults now, so the rules of the house work best when you make them together.
These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.
The common trap
Making the rules on your own, then enforcing them in the middle of an argument.
A better goal
Agree on a few small house rules together, early, while things are calm.
The plan
1. Before
- Decide ahead of time what you'll do if it gets heated, so you aren't deciding in the moment.
- You'll see each other tomorrow too. Agree on when politics is off-limits, like meals or bedtime.
- They're an adult with their own reasons. Curiosity will do more than advice.
2. Setting the limit
“I love our dinners. Can we make them a politics-free zone?”
“I'm glad to disagree with you, but I'm not okay with name-calling, from either of us.”
“I'm not going to talk politics with you anymore, but that doesn't change how much I love you.”
3. Techniques to lean on
4. If it heats up
“I can feel us both getting heated. Can we slow down a second?”
“I love you too much to keep fighting about this right now. Can we take a break and come back to it?”
“Hang on, I want to make sure I understand you. Can you say that part again?”
5. Exit lines
“I love you, and I don't want to fight. I'm going to step away for a bit.”
“I'm going to get some air. I'll be back in a few minutes.”
6. After
- Keep to the limit you set, kindly, every time. Consistency is what makes it stick.

Reach out first
A short, warm message before you talk can make the first minute easier.
Before a holiday or family visit
Hey, I'm really looking forward to seeing you this week. I know the news is super heavy right now and we see things differently, so I'd love for us to take a break from politics while I'm in town and just catch up on life. Love you and see you soon.
Why it works: Leads with warmth and excitement to see them before setting a mutual, low-pressure boundary.
Ground rules with a brother or sister before a visit
Hey, can't wait to see you next weekend. The last couple of visits got bumpy, so can we keep this one about us—the kids, the games, whatever—and leave politics out of it? I'd much rather just enjoy our time together.
Why it works: Sets the ground rules ahead of time, when you are both calm and nobody feels put on the spot.
