30-second panic mode
In the room right now
When your heart is pounding, a long plan is useless. Pick where you are, use one line, and get through the next minute. That is the whole job right now.
A meal or a group, and the temperature is rising.
10-second reset
Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, and take one slow breath before you speak. Nothing good happens in the first three seconds of a spike.
Pause lines
Say one of these to drop the temperature.
“Let's put a pin in that for now—I'd rather hear how you've been.”
“I can feel myself getting worked up, and I don't want to say something I'll regret.”
“We're not going to settle this tonight, and that's okay. Pass the potatoes?”
Graceful exits
Ways to step out without slamming the door.
“I'm going to step outside for a minute and get some air. Save my seat.”
“I'm going to call it a night while we're still on good terms. Love you.”
“Let's pick this up another time—I want to actually enjoy being here with you.”
